Grandma Waldern emulated love and true grit. Love for her family, love for friends, love of music (her choirs) and the kazoo-saxophone (she played in a band), love for her neighbours, love for the many patients she cared for (she was a nurse), and love for God; boy, did she love the Lord. And it was all the time. Whenever we visited, she always greeted us with big hugs and kisses and "How are ya darlin'?" Love seemed to gush out of her. Gram always made me feel like I was the most important. And while I felt that, I also saw that she had that same impact on others whether family or friends or neighbours. She was love in action.
Grandma's true grit was evident throughout her life; as a child, a young accomplished nurse, a mother, a divorcee, and single mother. Grandma Waldern was a woman-warrior through so many trials. And at the end of it all, she loved still. She quoted to me many times, "And this, too, shall pass." She was an incredible example of determination to provide for her family, something which she has passed down through her legacy.
Some of my favourite memories are that of coming home from school to the smell of her homemade buns. She had been up early and busy all day to make them just right. And just right they were indeed.
I cherish the many Christmases, Thanksgivings and big family get-togethers spent at Grandma Waldern's in Lacombe, Ponoka and Red Deer before I moved to Ontario.
Grandma Waldern was always interested in all the little details, always having an attentive ear and a hug to comfort, encourage or congratulate. Grandma's cheering at games, recitals and concerts always stood out, even next to Dad's. And not a phone call or letter (which were very timely and regular) ended until she had said, "God bless ya darlin'. I love you." She loves us still so much as she rests in Jesus, reunited with Uncle Rosco and Dad, and family and friends who have gone Home before her. How wonderful for her to hear, "Well done, my good and faithful servant in whom I am well pleased."
So I honour Grandma Waldern/Great Gram today and the legacy she has left in each one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We wish we could be there with you all in person; we are in spirit.
Sincerely,
Dana, Brookelyn, Rabekah, Curtis and Sydney.
We love you and are grateful for you, Gram, more than words can say.
