I know that I am posting this so very late, but I just stumbled onto his notice.

He was my Company Sargeant-Major in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in Winnipeg Manitoba. From where I stood as a 17 year old recruit in 1984 I saw Dan as bigger than any man on the planet, with huge hands and dark piercings eyes that could look into the depth of a infantrymen’s being. He was a true leader and motivator of men and would not give up on you even if you had lost all faith in yourself. In time his troops would recognize he was more than just his size, he was very smart man with a sharp sense of humour and was very loyal to his men. Also he really liked country music so therefore that’s what the troops were going to be listening to if he was there in the field with you. Dan had a positive effect on many, many males turning into adulthood. He has my respect.

Dan was a soldier, a friend, and a wonderful man. When we met Dan he and John swapped stories about their respective armies, and the two men had a whale of a time. Dan's humour, his intelligence, his very great humanity and ultimately, his faith, were things that defined him. He loved my friend Val. He will be missed. He will be missed.
