Wilfred Hemeyer Obituary

Wilfred Hemeyer passed away at the Northcott Care Centre in Ponoka on November 30, 2018 at the age of 100 years.  Wilfred was born to Ern and Ida Hemeyer at their farm west of Ponoka on November 27, 1918 with his Grandma Louise Hemeyer acting as midwife.  Wilfred took grades one to nine at the Bismark one room school before taking grade ten and most of grade eleven in Ponoka.  At a dance at Ferrybank Hall he met Hazel Stickney and they were married June 24, 1941.  Wilfred joined the army a year later and was sent to Ontario.  Shortly after the war their three children were born.  After that his life was filled with farm activities just as the age of horse drawn machinery and threshing crews was giving way to tractor power and combines.  Mixed in with the farming they attended lots of dances and card parties.  Besides farming, he also drove school bus at Crestomere for eighteen years.

Wilfred held many volunteer positions including Service Officer of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ponoka Branch #66.  Eventually three grandchildren were added to his family.  In 1980 Wilfred and Hazel retired to Ponoka where they delivered Meals On Wheels for awhile.  Wilfred also drove the wheel chair van for five years as well as the Lion’s Bus and the Ponoka General Hospital Handi Van.  A new dimension was added as his eight great-grandchildren arrived.  Besides driving his van out to the farm regularly, his summers were filled with driving his mini motorhome out to Medicine Lake for a couple of hours in the afternoon to just relax in it.  A good portion of his winter days was spent ice fishing.  Finally, Wilfred moved to Northcott in February of 2012.

Wilfred is remembered by his son Vern (Carol), granddaughter Krista Simanton (Travis Lien) and great-grandchildren Tyson, Shelby, Jake, and Luke Simanton; grandson Ethan (Heidi) and great-grandchildren Michaela, Brooklyn, Jesse, and Mackenzie; his son Allan (Yvonne); and his son Howard (April) and granddaughter Chiyla.  Wilfred is also survived by a special friend Joyce Brown.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2018 with the Interment Service following at Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Northcott Care Centre, Ponoka & District Health Foundation (Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre), Ponoka Wheelchair Van Society, or any charity of your choice.
