Walter Maplethorpe Obituary

Walter Alfred Maplethorpe
September 24, 1929 - February 8, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father Walter Alfred Maplethorpe, February 8, 2022 at the age of 92 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children; David (Carolyn), Hilary (Dennis), Adrian (Lois); grandchildren, Amanda (Michael), Julie (Colin), Marcus (Jessica), Michael (Natasha), Steven (Jamie), Matthew (Karla), Christopher (Caitlin), Emily, Caden, Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Jessy, Ella, Seth, Aurora, Walker, Lucas, Theo, Madalyn, Brynlee, Carter; his brother Roy and many nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Doreen; daughters, Valerie and Sandra; daughter-in-law Carolyn; sister, Irene; and his brothers, Harry, Raymond and Cliff.

Walter's 92 years covered a remarkable time in history beginning with his birth on September 24, 1929, in Lincolnshire, England, at the start of the great depression. He was child at the beginning of World War II, and during this conflict, at the age of 12 years he became a member of the Home Guard with his father and brothers. Walter later joined the British Army serving in the 8th (Kings Royal Irish) Hussars. He was amazed watching technology change the world.  He loved to share stories of his time as a child and young adult in England and his experiences after immigrating to Canada in 1968, with his wife and children.  He settled the family in Wetaskiwin in 1969. Walter was an entrepreneur throughout his life and founded a successful company in his new country. Walter was a perennial green thumb, always loved a new vehicle, made the best golden mushroom pork chops, found uses for many found items, and was a bargain hunter stocking his fridge with treats for his great-grandchildren to shop for when they visited.  He enjoyed times with his children and his grandchildren, especially when they were young, and took great pleasure in his great-grandchildren who knew him as Big Grandad. Walter spent much of his last twenty years hosting family functions and was never happier than when his house was full.

Thanks to the wonderful Home Care Staff who helped our family to keep Walter in his own home as long as possible.

In memory of Walter, if you can, please plant a tree.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
