Thomas Flaman Obituary

Tom was born on March 7, 1934, in Southey, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents Julius and Nellie Flaman; and his siblings Doreen Moggey, Wenzel Flaman, Julie McDonald, Emily Koch, Donald Flaman, and Lawrence Flaman. Tom is survived by his loving brother, Sebastion Flaman; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

From an early age, Tom developed a deep appreciation for farm life, the outdoors, and animals. By the age of three he was already riding horses, beginning a lifelong connection to ranching and horsemanship. Resourceful and mechanically gifted, he learned welding on the family farm using equipment he built himself from a World War II surplus airplane generator and a 1940 Chevrolet engine. Tom moved to Calgary in 1957 and worked as a welder and ranch hand. He became highly skilled in operating heavy equipment, including cats and graders and contributed to numerous oilfields, golf courses and the City of Calgary projects. During the 1980’s he worked in the Arctic in oil and gas exploration. Tom was an expert guide and rode his favorite horse Ivy on many horse back riding tours in and around the breath-taking country at Ya Ha Tinda Ranch. Besides being a respected cattleman and accomplished horseman, he was also an avid mechanic and enjoyed working on the many Ford trucks he had over the years. Tom liked to keep busy and in his final days he enjoyed doing leather work, tinkering with his welder and helping Peter split firewood. Tom was known for his resilience, practical wisdom, and sense of humor. He kept his tools sharp, his belongings organized and his standards high. He lived life fully, on his own terms, and met every challenge with courage and grit.

Tom passed away as he lived; with great courage!  “92 and that will do!”

Sincere thanks to Peter and to all the staff at the Centennial Centre (Aurora) for the compassionate care they provided. In keeping with Tom’s wishes, no formal service will be held.
