Rodney Gordon Fraser

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Rod Fraser, who left us after a courageous, year-long battle with cancer—fighting with every ounce of strength and bravery he possessed. A man of quiet resilience, adventurous spirit, and deep devotion to his family, Rod lived a rich, full life defined by hard work, global travels, and cherished moments with those he loved most.

Born in Calgary, Alberta, on November 12, 1941, Rod was raised in Cochrane, Alberta, surrounded by a large and lively family. With his wife, Una, Rod had three sons. Seeking opportunity and adventure, Rod embarked on a career in the oil patch that took him across Western Canada and around the world. His professional journey took him to New Zealand, Australia, and offshore operations in Aberdeen, Scotland, as well as the waters off Newfoundland.

Throughout his career, Rod earned the respect of colleagues for his skill and composure under pressure. Notably, while working on the 706 rig off the coast of Newfoundland during the severe storm that tragically took the Ocean Ranger, Rod dispatched work boats into the tempest in a heroic attempt to rescue crew members in distress.

While working in Scotland, Rod met his beloved second wife, Val. Together with her son, Mark Pauline, they returned to Canada to establish their family life back West. After returning to Alberta and retiring to British Columbia for a time, Rod eventually settled back in Alberta. He was particularly overjoyed when his stepson Mark married Joanna Bouvier and blessed the family with a granddaughter, Mirielle.

Mirielle instantly became the absolute apple of Rod’s eye. Some of his happiest years were spent taking her camping at Slave Lake, building sandcastles on the beach, and sharing stories by the shore. In their later years, Rod and Val embraced the snowbird lifestyle, traveling down to Mission, Texas, for nine memorable winters—loving every single minute of the warm sunshine and community.

Rod is survived by his wife Val; his sons Mark and Cameron; his stepson Mark Pauline (Joanna Bouvier); his cherished granddaughter Mirielle (Keifer Hintz) and great-grandson Mateo; and his brother Percy. He was predeceased his son Michel; and his siblings Jackie, Raymond, Shirley, Marilyn, Gloria, Rodney, and Brian.

A private family service will be held.
