It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Rob) Matthew McKay on October 1, 2025, at the age of 51 in Ponoka, Alberta. Born on March 1, 1974, in Newmarket, Ontario, Rob grew up in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Rob and his wife Debra raised their family together there, then moving on to Fort St. John, British Columbia before finally settling in Ponoka, Alberta.
Rob's passions included motorcycle riding, camping with loved ones, travelling, photography, and playing guitar. He greatly enjoyed watching Nascar and F1 racing, being a Ferrari enthusiast. His greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren, Phoenix and Nova-Lee, whom he called every day. He was also known for his great sense of humour, liked sharing 'dad jokes' and funny memes. He believed in service and giving back to his community, shown by volunteering as a firefighter for many years. Rob was a very talented woodturner, although he would say he was not artistic, and that he "could make square things round". Rob was dedicated in his work as a gas plant operator for the last 25 years and enjoyed the teamwork and friendships of his crew members.
Rob will be deeply missed by his wife, Debra; son Noah McKay, daughter Cynthia Bertoia and husband Oliver, daughter Kaitlyn-Jade Auger and husband Kyle; grandchildren Phoenix and Nova-Lee; mother Gail McKay; siblings Cathy McKay, Wally McKay and wife Shirley; and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce McKay.
A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Lacombe, Alberta, on Wednesday, October 15th, at 1:00 pm.
Rob's warmth, humor, and love for his family will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
