Marinus Huysmans

Marinus Huysmans, husband of Anny, passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 92 years. Marinus was born December 21, 1932, in Dinteloord, Netherlands, the fourth of ten children. Marinus married Anny on April 12, 1956 and together they moved to Bassano, Alberta on May 1, 1956 where he worked on a farm. On April 1, 1963 they moved to Ponoka, Alberta where Marinus and Anny bought the family farm east of Ponoka which still remains in the family.

He will be missed and remembered by his wife Anny; four children: MaryAnne Brett, Carmen (Keith) Pritchard, Harry (Jackie) Huysmans, and Tony (Rita) Huysmans; grandchildren Allison, Janelle, Andrew (Sam), Cole (Jenica), Sabrina (Ryan), Nolan (Heidi), Mia (Ezra), Jeff (Michaela), Mitch (Carolyn), and Ryan (Mikka); and 12 great grandchildren.

Farming was always his passion and Marinus’s daily exercise and stretches allowed him to continue to get in and out of the combine with ease even into his later years. Marinus was grateful for his friends and many hours spent playing cards over the years, and he could often be found drinking hot chocolate at Tim Horton’s with Fred and the gang. Marinus loved reminiscing about his youth in the Netherlands and his family always enjoyed hearing stories of his time there. You could always count on Marinus to lend an ear, and while he would tell you what he thought, he did so with humor and compassion. Marinus was always happy to see you and we will all miss his singing and toasts at family gatherings. While he didn’t get to see the Oilers win the cup again, his love for the games brought much of the family together for many memorable evenings at his home the last couple years. Marinus knew he was blessed to watch his family grow and he was very proud of the life he created with Anny.

Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, in Marinus’s name can be made to the Stollery Hospital in Edmonton (www.stollerykids.com) as Marinus was thankful for the care that two of his great-grandchildren received at the Stollery in the last year.

Please have a Heineken and watch the sunset in his memory. A Celebration of Life is being held on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ponoka Golf Club.
