Joshua Jeffrey

June 15, 1929 ~ May 16, 2020 (age 90)

J.A.P. Jeffrey

June 15, 1929 - May 16, 2020

Joshua Anthony Phillip, born on June 15, 1929, on the island of Grenada, was known as Joshua, Anthony, Tony, Phil, Dad, Papa, and Br. Jeffrey, depending on the circumstance. Born to parents from Grenada and St. Vincent, Phil was predeceased by two sisters and one brother, he being the youngest. Both his father and mother died, which made his early life difficult.

Phil lived in Grenada, St. Vincent, Trinidad, and England, before seeking opportunity in Canada where he worked at Chedoke Hospital in Hamilton. In 1966, he met Eleanor Maitland at a church social and they were married in June 1967.

Out of concern for the people of the Caribbean, Phil established Caribbean Aid Program, a charity with the slogan “Small Step for Man.” Under his guidance, medical supplies and clothes and funds were collected, and barrels were sent to various islands after disaster struck.

Phil worked at the Homewood Health Care Centre. In Guelph, he served as Community Services leader, deacon, and chorister in the local Rosedale Adventist Church.  In 1998, he retired from work but continued to serve. Sometime later, he and Eleanor moved to Mississauga and in 2007 to Lacombe, Alberta to be closer to family. He loved to sing and joined the “Men of Faith” men's chorale.

Phil loved to walk, and as he did not like the cold weather, would often walk in the Lacombe Centre Mall. He also liked to give out juice boxes to the children and young people wherever he went. In May 2019, he underwent an amputation for impaired circulation. He faced many medical challenges and peacefully passed to his rest on Sabbath morning, May 16, falling asleep in Jesus.

Many will remember him as a powerful singer, an active humanitarian, a dashing dresser, a kindly gentleman offering juice and asking about your day, a friendly man with a winning smile, a gentle Papa with entrancing stories, or a grandfather always willing to listen and play. One thing for sure: he will be missed.

Phil leaves to mourn his wife Eleanor; sons Phillip Jr. of Vancouver and David of Lacombe; his daughter-in-law Mathy; grandchildren Brielle and Briley; adopted grandson Delorn; nieces in England, Montreal, and New York; many cousins in the USA and Caribbean; and a bounty of friends around the world. We look forward to the Second Coming of Jesus where we will all be reunited.

The private Funeral Service will be live-streamed from on Friday, May 22, 2020  at 1:00 p.m.

Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
