With deepest sorrow, Joan's family announces her passing in Sherwood Park, Alberta, surrounded by love and family at the age of 93.
Joan was most proud of her 6 children: Sandra Downey, Roslyn (Ron) Lewis, Mike (Michele) Wass, Nigel (Louise) Wass, Steve (Lee Anne) Wass, and Tim Wass.
She was predeceased by her grandson Arthur Lewis and son-in-law Gary Downey; as well as by her siblings and their spouses: Jessie (Stan) Ball, Ralph (Sheila) Fuller, John (Betty) Fuller, Nellie (Duncan) Redmond and Mary (Alf) Holland.
At the age of 54, Mom completed the Hospitality Program at Red Deer College. She was very proud of that accomplishment, as she should have been, and landed a job as Night Head of Housekeeping for the Banff Springs Hotel. She loved her time there working with all the "young people" who treated her as their mom away from home.
She leaves behind a legacy of 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews across the country.
Joan was born in England. Her life's journey took her from England to Nova Scotia, back to England, back to Nova Scotia, on to New Brunswick, Alberta, Gambier Island (B.C.) and finally back to Alberta. She made lifelong friends everywhere she went.
Mom lived her life with strength and grace. She kept her sense of humour until the end. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A private family service will be held.
Memorial Donations in Joan’s name are gratefully accepted to Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer Society of Alberta.
