It is with great sadness the family of Joan May Owens announce her passing at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre June 15, 2025, at the age of 89 years.
Born May 29, 1936, in Ponoka to Duncan and Esther (Morrow) McMillan, Joan and her younger brother, Danny, grew up just west of Ponoka on a farm in the Grand Meadow District. It was a source of great pride and pleasure for her that the 5th and 6th generation of her family - her granddaughters and great-grandchildren - now reside on the land homesteaded by her grandpa and grandma Morrow in 1900.
On July 16, 1959, Joan married Ron Owens and they raised 2 children, Craig and Linda, while farming east of Ponoka. Joan worked many years as a Secretary/Bookkeeper, the latter of which were for Wetoka (Ponoka) Health Unit and Ponoka FCSS. She loved those jobs dearly and made many good friends while working there.
Joan was a big walker – covering a lot of ground when the family moved to a home in Riverside in 1980. She had a delightfully droll sense of humor and was always a voracious reader. Joan took great pleasure in her granddaughters and in later years, great-grandchildren, and loved the frequent updates of what everyone was up to.
Joan is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ronald; son Craig (Debi); daughter Linda (Arnold) Prediger; granddaughters Holly (Darren) Zimmer, and Katie Prediger; and great-grandchildren Rhett, Willa May, and Rosie Zimmer. She was predeceased by her parents Duncan and Esther McMillan; brother Danny “Boonie” McMillan; and her father and mother-in-law Archie and Ruby Owens.
The family would like to thank the nurses at Ponoka Home Care, and the staff at Seasons Ponoka for their wonderful care.
At Joan’s request, no service will be held. If you desire, a Memorial Donation to Old MacDonald Kennels, Whisker Rescue or any animal rescue of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
