James Dunham (Jim), born on February 27, 1947, in Red Deer, Alberta, and passing on March 17, 2025, is remembered as a man of great character, service, and passion. His journey in life took him from his early years in Red Deer to a distinguished period of service as a young soldier in the Survival Training Units. In 1969, he moved to Ponoka — a community he would come to call home for the rest of his life.
In 1971, Jim married his beloved Evelyn Wilhelm, and he embarked on a fulfilling career in psychiatric nursing, completing his studies at the AHP Centre between 1973 and 1975. His dedication to caring for others continued until his well-earned retirement in 2007.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was a man of many interests. An avid golfer and train enthusiast, he delighted in the rhythms of 1960s music and cherished camping and travel adventures with family and friends. His commitment to community was evident in his roles as a leader, hockey manager, Mason, and Shriner — each reflecting his enduring dedication to service and camaraderie.
Jim’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his wife, Evelyn; his son Michael (Lisa); his daughter Lynn (Chris); his grandchildren Isaac, Penelope, Isabella, and Jordanna; and his sister Carol, as well as countless relatives, friends, and colleagues who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of his memory and lifelong commitment to helping others, charitable donations may be made to FCSS Ponoka. To contribute, please visit: https://www.ponokafcss.net/donate
Jim’s life was a testament to service, love, and the joy of community, and his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
