Hugh Mason Obituary

Hugh Mason of Wetaskiwin passed away peacefully on April 3, 2022 at 96 years of age.

Hugh is lovingly remembered by his children, Jim Mason (Lucie), Laura Mason, Kim Clarke (Eric), Joann Murphy (Wayne), Jane Mason (Doug Mikalson) and Hugh Mason; grandchildren, Gabrielle Betts (Kent), Sean Murphy (Natalie), Liam Murphy (Zoey Liu), Owen Mason (Jennifer), Bailie Mason, Ian Mason and Caileigh Mikalson; and great-grandchildren Nash, Harper, Aubre, and River. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Hugh was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Beth; his grandson Patrick; his siblings: James, Margaret, Gerrard, Howard, Joan, Elizabeth and Douglas; his nephew Laurie and niece Barbara.

Hugh lived a full and happy life. He loved his family above all else. Hugh graduated from the University of BC and had a breadth of careers. He was a cowboy, a reporter for the Edmonton Journal, an insurance investigator, the Executive Administrator for the Alberta Cancer Board and a farmer. He also served on various charitable and not-for-profit boards.  Hugh loved his dogs, hockey, camping, fishing, hunting, reading, and history.  He is renowned for his storytelling and his adventurous spirit.  In his teens,  Hugh’s horse pulled him from a raging Bonaparte River and while attending university he raced the Vancouver police across the Lion's Gate Bridge on his Harley…they didn’t catch him.  His stories sprang from a rich, full and colorful life.

In memory of Hugh, donations may be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.
