Hedy Klause Obituary

Hedy Klause
1931-2023

“Music…amongst the gifts that God hath sent…one of the most magnificent”.

The family of Hedy Klause of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, is deeply saddened to announce her passing on January 17, 2023 at Sagebrush Seniors residence. Hedy was born to Florentine and Adolf Grams of September 26, 1931 in Sibbald, Alberta. The Grams family moved to a farm in Gwynne in 1941. Hedy attended Wetaskiwin Camp Center High School, where she met the love of her life, Alvin. Hedy and Alvin were married in 1959 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. They were blessed with three children, Kevin, Carolyn and Ken. Hedy and Alvin were active members of the First United Church, for many years where they both taught Sunday School and Hedy was church organist and were involved in numerous community endeavours. Throughout Hedy’s life, music was her greatest passion. Hedy was an accomplished performer and teacher, who taught piano, pedagogy, harmony ear training, music history and music classes for over 50 years in Wetaskiwin. As her reputation grew, Hedy earned a degree from the University of Alberta Associate in Music, became a provincial music examiner and adjudicator for countless music festivals and competitions throughout the province of Alberta. She officiated for the Western Board of Music and helped create the new piano syllabus for Conservatory Canada, a nation-wide music examination system.

In 1970, Hedy became president of Alberta Registered Music Teachers Association, ARMTA, where she was a passionate advocate for musical education. In 1993, Hedy developed and founded the Alberta Professional Teachers Association, APTA, where she served as president for six years. Hedy received the “Pioneer of the Year Award” in 2008, an award sponsored by the Wetaskiwin Memorial Museum.

Hedy  is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband Alvin and their three children, Kevin (Heather), Carolyn (Michael), Ken (Alix); her grandchildren, Stephanie (Chad), Nicolas, Georgia and Hudson. Hedy was predeceased by her siblings, Edgar, Leonard, Melita, William and Grant. She is survived by her sister Amie Gamble and brother Garry Grams.
