Elsie (Kellert) Eklund

July 1, 1917 ~ May 8, 2018 (age 100) 100 Years Old

Elsie Eklund Obituary

Elsie Eklund of Thorsby, Alberta, passed away peacefully  on May 8th, 2018 at the age of 100 years 10 months and 8 days, with her daughter by her side. Elsie farmed with her husband, Ernest T. Eklund, thirteen miles west of Wetaskiwin until June10th, 1977, when they sold their farm and moved into Thorsby to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law. Sadly Ernest went into hospital in August and passed away on October 30th. They had been married for 31 years and 4 days. Elsie was born to Gottlieb and Ottilie Kellert in Astrichant, Russia in the state of Siberia. Elsie's father died suddenly when she was only seven months. Her mother remarried  to a Baron P. Nosk, who also passed and then to Karl Piel. The family immigrated to Canada in 1929 to the Wetaskiwin district where they homesteaded. Elsie married in 1932 to Gustav Klingbeil and they had a son, Albert. In 1946 Elsie remarried to Ernest Eklund and they had a daughter, Shirley. Elsie is survived by her son, Albert (Elsie) Klingbeil; grandsons, Kelly, Murray (Andrea), Garry (Jodie); and grandaughter, Melanie (Curtis) Smith; daughter, Shirley (Lawrence) Dool; grandson, Richard (Lori); and granddaughter, Michelle (Kurt) Nahuliak. Also 12 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren and another due this summer. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Ernest; brothers, John, Bert and Oscar Piel; sisters, Erna Jackson and Hilda Piel; nephew, Kevin Piel; and daughter in-law, Shirley Klingbeil.

Services will be held Saturday, May 19th at Bakers Funeral Chapel in Wetaskiwin at 2:00 p.m. Viewing will be open to the public at 1:00 p.m. Internment will take place at the Wetaskiwin Memorial Cemetery Cemetery and lunch will be served at the Seniors’ Centre. Donations may go to the Devon General Hospital Foundation or St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Thorsby or to the charity of your choice.
