Egon Greve Sommer was born October 23, 1942 to Karen and Kresten Sommer in Denmark. He was the third of six children. In 1957, at the age of 14, Egon (along with the rest of the Sommer family) boarded a ship and came to Canada, landing at Pier 21. They boarded the train and made their way out west to Lacombe, Alberta. The family travelled to Marwayne to obtain work on local farms. The family returned to Ponoka. After a few years, Egon then worked on a bridge crew along side his dad. In 1965 Egon and his brother Knud started a construction company. In 1971 Sommer Brothers was established. Egon continued to work until 2008 when he decided to finally retired. Egon was proud to contribute to the community of Ponoka. He drove the Ponoka Lions bus for over 30 years. He was very proud to be able to drive his children and grandchildren to hockey games and skating competitions, but; he was even more proud to watch them. Egon’s love for driving bus lead him to Frontier Bus Lines in Red Deer where he travelled throughout the western provinces and the USA. In the later years Egon found joy in keeping the yard immaculate: mowing the lawn, rototilling the gardens, picking produce, and keeping the flowers. He faithfully walked the driveway daily to ensure he could show everyone how many miles he made that day, or week.
Egon will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 55 years, Norma; daughters Shirley (Lorne) and Arlene (Harley); grandchildren Zachary, Brandi-Lynn (Richard), Katelyn (Levi), Hunter (Georgia) and Callie (Sam); and great- grandsons Blake and Samual; his sisters Kirsten(Knud) of Denmark, Olga (Mike) and Vera (Scott); and sister-in-law Lil and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Kresten and Karen Sommer; sister Tove; brother Knud; son Egon JR; and grandsons Kirk, Lucas and Levi.
Memorial donations in Egon's name are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Lung Association, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S.), Mental Health Foundation, or Alberta Cancer Foundation.
