Ed Smith Obituary

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Harold Edward "Ed" Smith in Edmonton on January 14, 2021.

Ed was born on July 5, 1939 in Barrie, Ontario. He passed away in Edmonton at the age of 81 Years. Ed grew up in a farming community in the Alliston, Ontario area and moved to London upon graduating high school. There he met Lynn McCaughey and they were married on June 9, 1962 and started their family. They moved to Alberta in 1970 so Lynn could be closer to her family.

He spent much of his work life as a computer programmer before IT was a recognized occupation. Upon retirement Ed worked at a greenhouse which was very fitting given his love for plants and growing things. He was a highly active volunteer with the Lions Club in Edmonton and took great pride in their projects.

Ed is fondly remembered for his time spent with his Soul Mate of 60 years doing many activities together, having thousands of crib games and spending time with family which was extremely important to him. He is also known for his active involvement in his children’s and grandchildren’s activities where he encouraged and cheered at figure skating competitions, swim meets, concerts, plays, baseball games, and hockey games where he had the ability to cheer above the rest of the spectators. Ed enjoyed gardening, picking berries, pickling, and just simply driving in the country to admire the crops.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lynn; his daughter Deborah (Darryl); his sons Chris (Sandi) and Craig (Shelley); grandchildren Bradley (Marly), Logan (Kashtin), Matthew (Morgan); Anna and Aidan; and great grandchildren Maverick, Blakely, and McKinley.

The family is thankful for the care provided to Ed by the Rutherford Heights staff, U of A dialysis team and hospital staff in his palliative condition. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s name are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Kidney Foundation.
