Donald was born August 17, 1940 in Edberg, Alberta to Nettie Chase. He graduated in 1959 from the Edberg High School and came to Ponoka to work at the Ponoka Mental Hospital (PMH), graduating from the Psychiatric Nursing Program in 1963. Don worked there full time until he purchased his farm, retiring in 2005.
In 1960 Don met Janice Umbach on a blind date, and they married in 1961 in Ponoka. Their son Darren was born in 1962 and Michael followed in 1966.
Don enjoyed baseball, curling, golf, and coaching hockey. He loved playing card games with friends, cross country skiing in Nordegg, trips to Fairmont, and watching baseball Spring Training in Arizona.
Donald was predeceased by his mother Nettie; grandparents Mary and Fred Chase; uncle Lloyd Chase; and special friend Mike Semeniuk. He is survived by his loving wife Janice; sons Darren (Valeen) and Michael (Charlotte); and grandchildren Erin, Taylor, and Talia (Dylan) Riehl.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025 (livestream viewer located below).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Ponoka Wheelchair Van Society.
