Claire "Joan" Compton Obituary

Joan Compton, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2025, at the age of 91. She was born on August 26, 1934, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and lived a life filled with love, adventure, and compassion.

Joan inspired those around her with her joy for living, her unwavering positivity, and her radiant smile. She had a remarkable gift for connecting with people from all walks of life and left a lasting impact on everyone she met.

At just 17, Joan married the love of her life, Don. The couple began their life together in Yellowknife before settling in Drayton Valley, where Don worked in the oilfield, and they embraced life on their farm. Once their children were grown, Joan and Don travelled widely, both throughout Alberta and across the United States, first with Don’s work and later as Snowbirds.

Joan’s adventurous spirit shone through in everything she did. She never missed an opportunity to try something new; her sense of curiosity and fun never faded.  She was a devoted mother and a faithful Christian, an enthusiastic hockey mom, a fun-loving singer, a skilled seamstress, an avid gardener, a talented artist and crafts person, a curler, a bowler, and an animal lover who cared deeply for cattle, horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and birds.

Above all, Joan was dedicated to her family. She was an exceptional mother to her children, Brenda and Brian, and a cherished grandmother to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy. She will be remembered for her warmth, her infectious laughter, and her ability to see the good in everyone.

Joan is survived by her children, Brenda (David) and Brian (Lucy); her grandchildren, Chantelle, Chelsea (Myles), Shawna (Patrick), David-Dwayne (Crystal), Sheri (John), Michael (Clare), Moises (Christina), Mary (Devon), Edward (Michelle), and Brian-cito (Brittny); her many great-grandchildren; and her sister, Ilene. She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Donald Frank Compton; her parents, Roy and Selma Cresswell; her brother, Roger; and her sister, Betty-Lou.

A funeral service and celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, with interment and a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Joan’s honour.

Joan’s spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.  We are heartbroken by our loss, but comforted in the sure and joyful knowledge that she is now in heaven, reunited with her Saviour and dancing once again in the arms of her beloved husband, Don. Her legacy lives on not only in her children and grandchildren, but also in the countless stories, songs, and quiet acts of kindness that will be retold for generations.
