Bob Kane Obituary

On January 15, 2025 Robert John Kane of Ponoka passed away at Long Term Care at Ponoka Hospital & Care Centre, at the age of 87 years.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Edith; his daughter Brenda (Trevor) Kowk of Ponoka and her children Blair (Kirsten) Wolfe, Amanda (Shaun) Connolley, and Brielle (Kalvin) Casey; his daughter Bobbi (Larry) Goodwin of Bentley and their children Anthony (Allison) Goodwin, Max (Laureen) Goodwin, and Rosalind Goodwin; and his daughter Angela Williams of Calgary and her children Kane Williams and Eden (Brad) Suley. His eldest daughter Colleen Provost passed in 2004 and is survived by her son Robert Provost. Bob was blessed with 15 great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his sisters Verna Kane, Ethel Schickerowski, and Eileen Moltzahn; and his brother David Kane.

Bob was born on the farm to Johnston and Anna as their 5th and last child. He was brought up to work hard, but he always looked for fun and mischief when he was a student at the Fertile Forest School. As a young man going to dances, in his newest car, was lifeblood to him. This is fortunate as he met the love and partner for life Edith McVittie from Bluffton. They were married in 1957 and went to work in the oilfields of Drayton Valley. They welcomed Colleen in 1958. The little family came home to help with spring planting at the family farm and never left. They expanded their family with 3 more girls Brenda, Bobbi and Angela. Bob became the consummate farmer, raising cows, milking cows, building and welding equipment, and expanding the land farmed by buying and renting land, with Edith farming right beside him.

Bob and Edith travelled the world and made sure their home was open to all friends and family. Bob’s lifelong dream of becoming a pilot was realized at 50 and he built his own ultralights planes to fly.  He cherished his grandkids and great-grandchildren, talking to them in a tender voice, playing and dancing with them, and singing to them. He will be always remembered for the easy laugh , the twinkle in his eye, and his love of talking to all people.  Sadly, the last few years were challenging with dementia but his spirit shone through.

Bob’s Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ponoka United Church with a Memorial Reception to follow.  The Interment Service will take place at Forest Home Cemetery after the reception.  The Funeral Service will be livestream broadcast.
