It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Betty Loue Chandler at the age of 85 years on August 16, 2025, at Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, after a brief illness.
Betty was born in Fairview, Alberta, on November 28, 1939, the beloved first child of Herbert and Belvah Englund. She spent her childhood in Fairview, where she completed her education and formed strong roots that would guide her throughout her life.
In 1961, Betty married William (Bill) Reid and embarked on the journey of starting a family. After returning to Fairview and divorcing William in 1970, she courageously raised her three children as a single mother on her parent’s farm. Determined to provide for her family, Betty pursued courses at Fairview College while working in the community to support herself and her children.
Later in life, Betty found love again when she married Gordon Chandler on July 19, 2003. Though their time together was brief – Gordon passed away on September 27, 2003 – their union brought joy to Betty’s final years.
In 2006, Betty moved to Ponoka to be closer to her daughter Tracey, where she continued to be the loving matriarch of her growing family.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses Yvonne and Tony Robertson and Tracey and Bill Elliot; daughter-in-law Ann Reid; grandchildren Chrysta (Sachin Lochan), Rory Robertson, Mackenzie (Evan Robertson-Zhang), Kyle Reid, Bryse Reid, Justina Reid (Darrel Fahrion), and Brandon Cherviakoff; great-grandchildren Von Lochan, Kael Lochan, Tatyana Fahrion-Reid, Jayden Fahrion-Reid, Zoey Fahrion-Reid, and Sakari Reid.
She was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Belvah Englund; her brother Calvin Englund; her son Howard Reid; and her husband Gordon Chandler.
Betty will be remembered by her strength, resilience, and the deep love she had for her family. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the generations she nurtured.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Ponoka Funeral Home. A light luncheon will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall following the Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
