Barbara Dykstra (born Boukje Kikstra)
It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Dykstra (née Kikstra), who left us peacefully on November 10, 2025, Red Deer, Alberta.
Born to Ymke and Janna Kikstra at Sint Annaparochie, Netherlands, she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1949. She grew up near Edmonton, later settling in Rocky Mountain House, where she met and married Jack Dykstra in 1962. Together they built their life in Edmonton until 1969, eventually putting down roots east of Ponoka, where they raised their family and created a warm, welcoming home for generations to come.
She embraced life with energy and heart. Whether tending to the small family farm, taking part in local sports leagues — including women’s baseball, curling, and bowling — or crafting beautiful quilting and sewing projects, she found joy in every day. She also loved camping and traveling, sharing those adventures with family and friends.
A devoted grandmother, she lovingly cared for her grandchildren while their parents worked, creating a home that radiated warmth, comfort, and endless affection. Every cherished grandchild knew her home as a place of safety and love — a true reflection of her generous spirit.
She was predeceased by her parents Ymke and Janna Kikstra; her husband, Jack Dykstra; her sister Gertie Bakker; her brother Henry Kikstra and sister-in-law Loraine Kikstra; and her sister Hilda LaDoucer.
She is survived by her brother Klaas (Linda) Kikstra; her sister Darlene (Gordon) Ironside; her children Tony (Leslee) Dykstra, Donna (Bruce) Roberts, Cynthia Dykstra, and Laureen Dykstra; her grandchildren Dawn deWaal, Kyle (Kristie) Davies, Ryan Davies, Bradley Dykstra, Tyler Dykstra, Clayton (Cathy) Roberts, and Chelsey Roberts; and her great-grandchildren Savannah Lungle, Harvey Roberts, Audrey Dykstra, Lucas Davies, Hazel Johnstone, and Kiera Johnstone. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will cherish her memory.
Her strength, kindness, and love will be remembered by all who knew her.
“My mind still talks to you, My heart still looks for you, But My Soul knows you are at Peace. In our hearts you will always stay, loved and missed every day.”
A celebration of her life will be held in the spring of 2026.
