It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Anna Esther Wiancko, a beloved farmer, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. Anna passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025 surrounded by family.
Anna Wiancko was born to Irene and Peter Anderson on December 30th, 1935 in Gladmar, Saskatchewan. She was the 4th of 13 children and held a deep love for all her siblings. Their home was filled with love, laughter, baking, and a lot of coffee.
Anna married Jim Wiancko in 1955. Together they worked and raised and their family on a farm East of Ponoka. Anna was a true partner to Jim. They worked tirelessly milking cows and tending crops and livestock. In addition to all the work she and Jim did together, Anna spent long hours in her garden. To her, time in the garden was a labour of love.
Anna nurtured her home, children, and grandchildren with warmth and care. She was the proud mother of 5 children: Shirley (Greg Petterson), Lyle (Joy), Leon (Debbie), Jim, and John (Tracee Pratt). She was the grandmother of Lanna, Blake, Nicole, Sarah, Ronald, Jody, Jordan, Michael, Christopher, Ashley, Leanne, Alyssa, Austin, Riley, Samantha, Mackenzie, and Ben; and the great-grandmother of Ellie, Willow, Reese, Barret, Sierra, Hunter, Ryder, Dylan, Colin, Riley, Zachary, Jamsine, Josephine, and Daxton.
Anna’s passing was preceded by that of her parents Peter and Irene Anderson; brothers Ole and John; sisters Elaine and Millie; husband Jim; son Leon; and grandson Blake. Anna is survived by brothers Oskar, Peter, and Elmer; sisters Mae, Carol, Lorna, Margret, and Marion; and children Shirley, Lyle, Jim, and John.
Anna’s home was a gathering place. It was filled with banter, laughter, baking, and continuous pots of coffee. She loved of gardening from seed to harvest, appreciated the beauty of flowers, nurtured children and animals, and valued time with friends and family around the kitchen table.
Although Anna was close with all her siblings, she and her sister Mae have been close since Mae’s birth. Over the years they travelled together, visited Casinos, helped plan family reunions, and spent countless hours on the phone. Over the last years the two shared a room in Northcott.
She will be remembered for being nurturing, spirited, hardworking and stubborn; for having unconditional love and patience for her children, grandchildren, and husband; for being the heart of the home, a partner on the farm, and for making the best buns.
We would like to thank Northcott for the excellent care Anna received. The staff was personal and kind throughout her time with them. Thank you as well to Dr. Chan, and the Ponoka Hospital staff who ensured that Anna was comfortable in her last days. Knowing that Anna was in peace has brought ease to her family.
A family only “Celebration of Life” will be held in the near future (date to be determined).
In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate that donations be made to Northcott Care Centre or the Palliative Care Centre in the Ponoka Hospital (Ponoka & District Health Foundation).
Anna’s warmth, nurturing spirit, and love of family has left a mark on us all. She will be remembered and loved by her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
