On the evening of Thursday, August 24, 2023 Allen Leroy Clarke of Stettler, Alberta, previously of Erskine, Alberta, passed away peacefully in Heritage House in Stettler. He had just turned 96 a few weeks before his death.
Allen was born on August 1, 1927 in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. He was the second child for Charles and Maud Clarke as they were on their way west from Ontario. The finally settled in the homestead country of Foley Timber, Alberta (about 5 miles south of Niton Junction, Alberta). While going to school at Canadian Junior College at College Heights, Alberta, he met and married Bertha Halstead in 1950. The two of them settled on their own homestead in Foley Timber from which he worked in various occupations while trying to run the farm. His occupations included: lumberjack, and door-to-door sales of different household and agricultural products.
First among Allen’s many interests was his devotion to his faith and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. His other interests included gardening, bee keeping, and becoming a pilot. His strong belief in Education led him to apply for upgrading through the Alberta Government to get his grade 10 and continue on to nursing orderly training. He worked for many years as an orderly in the facility that would one day become Heritage House. He and Bertha had a strong interest in nature and belonged to the local naturalist club where they participated in numerous outings. As his gardening began to produce more food than the family needed, he and Bertha got involved with the farmer’s market on a regular basis.
Allen was predeceased by his brother Bob and Elmer and his sisters Gertrude (Brown, Wecker) and Myrtle (Raposo, Grovet); and his wives Bertha (Halstead), Irma (Schaber), and Margaret (Bedford). He is survived by his sisters Violet (Hagen) and Margaret (Corbet); his children Henrietta, Margaret, Daniel, Charles, and Harold; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with many nephews and nieces.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Stettler Seventh Day Adventist Church at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023. The Interment Service will follow at the Erskine Cemetery and then a Funeral Reception at the Rochon Sands Community Hall.
