Mavis Fern Henkel was born at home on February 19, 1933. Mavis passed away in Ponoka on February 22, 2019 at the age of 86 years.
Mavis was the eldest of seven children, born to John and Bertha Henkel of Duffield, Alberta. Her childhood years were spent in the Duffield community. She came to work for the Kaechle family in the Bashaw area where she met her future husband, Victor Sandin. Mavis and Victor were married on October 24, 1953. They made their home on the Bill Sandin farm where they farmed and raised their five children together. Mavis was well known in the community and family for her delicious cooking, cake decorating, and welcoming hospitality. She was active in the church and in the Calumet Ladies’ Aid group.
Mavis will be remembered by her son David (Gaylia) and grandchildren Brendon (Wendy) and Sara-Jane (Derek); daughter Lorna (Dennis) and granddaughter Amanda; son Jim (Deb) and grandchildren Jesse (Kayleen), Amber (Kevin), Gina (Brendan), and Klay; daughter Bonnie and grandchildren Jennifer (Brett), Candace (Russell), and Levi; son Glen (Laureen) and grandsons Ashton, Jaden, Mathias, and Lukas; her great-grandchildren Hunter, Kingston, Rowan, Hailey, Curtis, Kayson, Emery, Rya, Addilie, Holden, Caleb, Rachel, Ragna, Jude, Nate, and Kya; her siblings Paulette (Ray) Nelson, Gerald (Laura) Henkel, Brian Henkel; and brother-in-law Earl (Joan) Sandin. Mavis was predeceased by her parents John and Bertha Henkel; her husband Victor; siblings Arthur Henkel, Lavern Millward, and Merle Dewald; and son-in-law Ron Miners.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at the Ponoka First Baptist Church.
