Johannes Teeuwsen Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joe Teeuwsen on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre at the age of 85 years.

Joe was born at home, on the farm, at Gendringen in the Netherlands to Johannes Christiann and Gesina Hendrika (Brusse) Teeuwsen.  Joe was the youngest of four with two sisters and one brother.

The family withstood all the perils of World War 2 and didn’t come to Canada until 1951.  There were many changes to be made in their new country such as language, customs, new types of work, and new friends to make.

Joe experienced many different jobs: C.I.L., farming with Mrs. Armstrong, Mutual Propane delivery, manager of Lloydminster Co-Op Propane, owning and operating Sherwood Park Mechanical Services Plumbing & Heating Co., and then went on to farming for forty years in the Lundgren district north of Crestomere.  While farming he took on teaching with Alberta Agriculture Skill Training courses for people in rural areas, with week long courses in plumbing, carpentry, heating, and home maintenance.  Joe really enjoyed his term as councillor with the County of Ponoka in division 4.

Joe leaves behind his wife Anne; four sons Terry (Jeannie), Glenn (Brenda), Wayne (Nancy), and Gerald (Karen); six grandchildren Shaun (Lindsay), Shawnda, Shaylah (Kevin), Joel (Kristyn), Paul, Cheryl (Albert), and Blaine (Dawn); fifteen great-grandchildren; his sisters Christina of Fort Saskatchewan and Annie in Holland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Henry; sister-in-law Flo; two brothers-in-law John and Jan; grandson Michael; granddaughter Jessica; and great-grandson Gavin.

A Prayer Service will be held at the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019. As per Joe’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at the farm at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe Teeuwsen may be made to the Ponoka and District Health Foundation or to the Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church.
