Huzella Erna (Littmann) Sampsel

Huzella Erna Sampsel was born in Thorhild, Alberta on April 8, 1931 and died peacefully with her daughter by her side on January 10, 2020.  She grew up on a farm in Northern Alberta near Grande Prairie with two older sisters and one younger brother.  Her parents had immigrated to Canada from Russia when her oldest sister was just a baby.  She married Ronald Sampsel on August 19, 1953 and they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary a few weeks before Ronald died.  Ronald and Huzella had two children, Lloyd and Barbara.

Huzella’s first job was babysitting for a family of three children which she very much enjoyed.  She next worked on a potato digger machine for a couple of seasons.  When they moved to Lacombe she found a job in the Parkland Bookbindery where she set up type for book covers.  She worked there for about eight years.  Ronald and Huzella then moved back to the Grande Prairie area.  She graduated from Fairview College with a secretarial degree but never did put those skills into a formal job.  She assisted Lloyd with raising his sheep for a couple of years.  The family moved back to Lacombe and Huzella again worked in the Bookbindery until it closed and then she worked in the Parkland Furniture Factory as a seamstress and manager of the sewing departments until she retired.

Ron and Huzella loved to go camping in the mountains and to take vacations to see family.  Many of their trips were to various places in the United States.  Another of Huzella’s greatest pleasures was working in her yard and garden.  She loved flowers and her yard was always full of bright colors.  Huzella loved to be in the out of doors whether camping, gardening, or going on long walks.

She is survived by her two children, Lloyd (Janet) and Barbara; five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister, Almeda and many nieces and nephews.  Huzella was predeceased by her husband Ronald; her parents Emanuel and Esther Littmann; sister Alice; and her brother Emanuel.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020.
