Harvey J. Deckert

With sadness, we announce the passing of Harvey J. Deckert on April 23, 2019 at the age of 94. He passed peacefully with his family by his side after 3 weeks of declining health. We are so thankful he was able to live well into his 90s very independently, just the way he wanted it. He bought a new vehicle last year and let us know it "might" be his last. He loved driving, whether it was to coffee twice a day or nowhere in particular. He was a very skilled carpenter and made beautiful furniture that his children and grandchildren will cherish forever.

Harvey was born on May 31st, 1924 in Ernfold, Saskatchewan to Ella and Jacob Deckert, the ninth of 10 children. The family settled in the Wetaskiwin area in 1940 and after highschool, Harvey joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served from 1942-1945. He later met his beautiful wife, Doreen. They were married on August 16th, 1948 and lived happily together until her death in 2014.

Left to mourn his passing are his children Allen (Cheryl) of Nanoose Bay, BC, Bradley of Wetaskiwin, AB, and Lisa (Nora Berg) of Parksville, BC. His granddaughters, Jessica Sookram (Sunil) of Edmonton and their children Findlay, Scarlett and Imogen; and Rebecca Mann (Jason) of Edmonton and their daughter Everly will forever remember him as the best grandfather and great-grandfather one could ever hope for. He is also mourned by his sister-in-law Pat McKenzie who refers to him as the best brother-in-law you could ask for. Harvey was predeceased by his parents Ella and Jacob; his wife Doreen and 8 of his 9 siblings.

A celebration of life will be held at Season’s Retirement Community on May 25th, 2019 from 2:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of one’s choice.
