It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother (G.G.), Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Skanes.
Betty was born in Bell Island, Newfoundland, raised in Cambridge, Ontario, and moved to Alberta in 1983. In 1961 she married Revelyn Skanes and soon after, had four children. She worked at Alberta Hospital Ponoka (now the Centennial Centre) for 20 years. She loved to knit, bake, garden, and woodwork. She loved to entertain and host events at Stampede time for the people and patients at the Centennial Centre and did volunteer work in the community.
She will lovingly be remembered by her children Janet (Bob Coutier) Skanes of Elliot Lake, Ontario, Donna (Larry) Charles of Ponoka, Karen (Daryl Kroening) Stevens of Ponoka, and Paul Skanes of Castlegar, British Columbia; grandchildren Myles Jr. (Amanda Urban) Hussey, Krista (Zachary) Maclean, Jolyne (Chad Duchesne) Hussey, Stacy (Kevin Connley) Charles, Sandra (Ryan) Ormandy, Amanda (Javin Klassen) Charles, Paige (Robert Kodiak) Charles, Tanis (Cole Hoar) Stevens, Kailey (Jordan Moorcroft) Stevens, Nicholas (Caylyn Beltz) Merchant Skanes, and Jannessa Myers; 11 great-grandchildren; her sisters Loraine Scott and Sylvia (Bob) Cochrane; brothers Robert (Dorothy) and George Jr. Kitchen; sisters-in-law Mable Musgrave and Lillian Peach; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws; and many “adopted” grandchildren.
Betty was predeceased by her husband Revelyn; her parents George and Mary Kitchen; sisters Stella Bruckner and Ray Kitchen; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Those wishing to pay their respects to Betty and the family are invited to a Visitation Time at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018. A Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ponoka at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018.
Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, Alberta Cancer Foundation, or S.T.A.R.S..
