Winnie was born Dec 27, 1933 in Breukelen, the Netherlands to Frederick Ernst Folkerts and Aagje Bokma. She came to Canada with her family in 1948 and settled in the Duchess area.
She and dad (Bill) were married in 1953 and lived in several communities throughout central Alberta before settling in Wetaskiwin.
Winnie was a successful business woman and active member of her community with many, many volunteer hours including the hospital auxiliary, palliative care and united church. She was an avid knitter and hundreds of her pieces went through the hospital gift shop. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her gardens, neighbors and friends. She loved to travel, visit the farms and the lake.
She is survived by her children, Brenda (Sarah (Curtis), Rena (Jeff), Karyn (Will), Wendy & Frank (Robin (Jenni), Lisa (Rob), Ryan, Cheryl & Mike, Bill, Linda (Drew, Rachel); great- grandchildren, Kyra and Kaylee, Colby and Hayden, Cameron, Isabelle and Ben, Evan; and numerous cousins and in-laws; sisters, Gay, Helen and Agnes; and brothers, Otto and Fred. Winnie was predeceased by her husband, Bill (June 2009); son in- law, Jim; grandsons, Craig and Caiden; and granddaughter, Lee-Anne; brothers, Auke, Johannes, John, Klaas and Jelle.
Mom will be remembered for her sense of humor, her incredible strength, her love of books and music, her pairing of red wine and chocolate, her mind for numbers and being a beloved family member and friend.
The family wishes to thank the neighborhood family for their friendship. The wonderful staff at Unit 35 and Dr. Hendriks who provided care above and beyond.
Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the First United Church, or to the Wetaskiwin Hospital Foundation (Women's Auxiliary).
