Dr. Johnson is predeceased by his loving wife, Wanda; his son, Brian Johnson; his sister, Verna Pelehos, as well as his mother and father.

Dr. Leavert Johnson was born January 12, 1917 in a small house on mainstreet in Wetaskiwin. He grew up in Wetaskiwin, but spent much of his childhood working with his father on the family farm near Malmo; as well, he worked at the family meat market in Wetaskiwin before going off to the University of Alberta to attend Medical School. While doing his internship at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton he met his wife to-be, Wanda.  He and Wanda married in 1942 and went on to raise their four children in Wetaskiwin.  He began practicing medicine in 1940 and opened his medical clinic in Wetaskiwin in 1946 - here he would continue to practice medicine for an astounding 63 years! Leavert was very committed to making the city of Wetaskiwin a better community and as such he built a company that provided affordable housing to the residents of Wetaskiwin. He also served on Wetaskiwin City Council for 12 years, 11 of which he was Mayor. At the same time he was also a member on the council for the Summer Village of Ma-Me-O Beach for eight years, with five of those years being Mayor. Therefore, he had the unique distinction of being Mayor of two municipalities at the same time. Other notable accomplishments included being Pioneer of the Year for Wetaskiwin in 2004 and he was also recognized as one of the Physicians of the Century in 2005. He was a member of several community organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #86, Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce, and the Wetaskiwin District Museum.  Dr Johnson loved spending time at his cabin in Ma-Me-O Beach where he enjoyed boating, fishing, ski-dooing, and entertaining his grandchildren. Doc Johnson, as he was referred to by many, was a pillar of the Wetaskiwin community; his kind, caring and generous nature was evident to all those around him.
