Katherine Jans was born on October 29, 1917, at home on the Lewisville Farm. She was the first born child to parents Herman and Dora Jans. In 1922 the family moved to Crooked Lake Near Gwynne. Three years later, in 1925, the family moved again to a farm west of New Norway. Katherine attended school 2 miles from home at Hoover School, where her love of reading and current events began.
Katherine worked on the family farm where her responsibilities included many chores and assisting with her 5 younger siblings. As a young lady, she moved to Wetaskiwin and worked as a secretary/ book keeper, for several years.
In 1946, Katherine and her brother, Armien bought the Lewisville farm from Mr. Ed Volkans, which is the farm where she was born. In August, 1946, Katherine’s son Alfred was born.
Katherine farmed with Armien and Alfred for 41 years until 1987 when Alfred suddenly passed away. Katherine and Armien bought a house in Wetaskiwin and moved into town in 1988.
Katherine passed away peacefully in her sleep January 23, in the Wetaskiwin Long term care. She is survived by her brother, Joe; sister-in-law, Helen; nephews, Ken (Holly), Donald (Donna), Curtis (Karen), Blair, Dale (Glenda); nieces, Royanne Adkens, Barb (Victor) Van Enk, Janet (Earl) Hofer, Debbie (Hugh) Perkins, Karen (Rick) Jacobsen; and many great nieces and nephews and many great-great- nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Herman and Dora, son Alfred, brothers Henry, Ernest and Armien; sister Elsie Bunney, brother-in-law, Art Bunney; and sisters-in-law, Gwen Jans and Darlene Jans.
Memorial Service: Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Baker Funeral Chapel, Wetaskiwin at 1:00 p.m.
