JANNETJE (Janny) HOFSTEDE
February 28, 1926 - January 29, 2018
Jannetje Leeuwenhoek was born on February 28th, 1926, to Jannetje and Jacobus Leeuwenhoek in Sloten, Holland, a small village close to Amsterdam. Janny and her older sister Elizabeth were quite young when disaster struck and the Spanish Flu took the lives of their father and grandmother in 1929. Eventually her mother remarried and in 1936, their younger sister, Johanna, was born. The three sisters grew up during the war, when life was not easy for anyone, and the family moved frequently. After the war, Janny met Dirk Hofstede, and they were married on August 6, 1947. In 1953, they left for Canada, wanting to follow Janny's family, who had immigrated the year before. After living in Wetaskiwin for one year, near her family, Janny and Dirk moved to Victoria. During their time there, Janny worked as a housekeeper and cook in the private setting and later, as a cook in the hospital. When it came time to retire, they both decided they wanted to move back to Wetaskiwin. In 1985, Janny and Dirk moved on to an acreage, across the highway from Janny's sister Elizabeth. Their time was spent fishing, enjoying their cats, and caring for their beautiful yard. Janny found great comfort in those cats, especially after Dirk passed away. In 2015, Janny moved into Madyson Manor to receive the expert care of the staff there. She enjoyed visits with her sister Joanne, now in Ontario, and from her nephew and nieces, and their families. Her niece, Janet, spent many hours with Janny, giving her extra personal care that she would have otherwise received from strangers, as well as taking her to various appointments and on fun outings. On January 29, 2018 Jannetje (Janny) Hofstede passed away at the age of 91 years. Jannetje was predeceased by Dirk, her loving husband of 65 years, and her sister Elizabeth Sukkel. Janny will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Joanne Rhode, and numerous nephews and nieces. Donations are gratefully accepted, in Jannetje Hofstede's name, to a charitable donation of your choice, or as a financial gift to Madyson Manor in Wetaskiwin.
