September 4, 1926 ~ January 24, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

JAMES DAVID MACKENZIE

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of James (Jim) David MacKenzie on January 24, 2017 at the age of 90 years.  Jim passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the Lacombe Palliative Care Unit after a brief illness.

Jim leaves to mourn his children Herb (Laura), Bonny, Jim, Cindy (Ed Mattie), Murray (Cathy), son-in-law Jack Neis, foster sons Lawrence (Lorna), Ned (Barb) and their families, sisters-in-laws Vicky, Alvina and Carrie and many, many nieces and nephews.  As well his true pride and joy “Grandchildren” - 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Jim was pre-deceased by his wife Marion, his parents Anna & Halbert, his brothers Tom (Josie), Ross, his sister Peggy and his daughters Heather and Linda.

Jim was born and raised near Luseland, Saskatchewan where he met and married Marion Schmidt on October 23, 1946.  They moved to Mirror, Alberta where they raised their family, farmed, and were a big part of the community.  Jim’s work life and retired life revolved around trains.  He started his career with CN in September, 1951 as a brakeman working through the ranks to Engineer retiring in August, 1980.  In retirement there was still a calling to be on the train.  He joined the Alberta Prairie Steam Excursions team as Conductor and Engineer – he was one of the few remaining that held a valid steam ticket to operate a Steam Engine.  He loved meeting people and he especially loved “driving” trains – what a great combination this was for him and for all those that had the pleasure of meeting him.  Jim also loved to sing – he had a very beautiful and distinct voice that will be sadly missed at all future sing alongs.  While Mirror will always be home for Jim the past three years he has been at Bashaw Meadows where he received exemplary care.

Jim will be remembered as a loving and kind man by family and friends and will truly be missed.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Lacombe Palliative Care Society.
