Helen Margaret (Winczura) Hemmingson

January 25, 1925 ~ September 29, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

HEMMINGSON, Helen Margaret
January 25, 1925 ~ September 29, 2016

Helen Margaret Hemmingson passed away peacefully on September 29, 2016 at the age of 91.

Helen was born in Round Hill, Alberta on January 25, 1925.  She was the third of nine children born to Wojtuk and Victoria Winczura.  Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Kulawy School near Round Hill.  She met Maurice “Axel” Hemmingson at a dance just outside of Camrose and they married in Camrose on April 15, 1950.  Helen and Axel moved all around the province for Axel’s work.  They welcomed the first of their six children together, Linda, on July 9, 1951.  Russell, Robert, Sheila and David followed, with their youngest, Kimberly, arriving on August 7, 1966.  The family settled and made a permanent home in Wetaskiwin in 1960.  Helen became an active member of the C.W.L. that same year.

Helen was a fabulous hostess and cook.  She worked as a cook at the Wetaskiwin Hospital for 21 years, finally retiring in 1990.  Helen and Axel stayed very busy in their retirement together.  They were members of the Good Sam’s Club and travelled all over North America in their motor home.  Helen was a great supporter of Axel’s love of music and traveled with him to his many jams and gigs.

Helen and Axel welcomed their first grandchild, Andrea, on January 1, 1983.  16 more grandchildren followed, with their last grandchild, Kyrie, arriving on February 22, 2003.  Helen and Axel hosted many wonderful family gatherings and get togethers with their many friends every year and there are few people in this world who can host like Helen.  Helen went on to welcome five great grandchildren over the course of the last five years and will always be remembered for her great big hugs, smiles and treats.  Helen and Axel shared 62 years of marriage and following Axel’s death in 2013, Helen’s great grandchildren provided her with great joy.

She is survived by her sisters, Ann Willisko, Martha Winczura; six children, Linda (Scott) Farnham, Russell (Tina) Hemingson, Robert (Laurette) Hemingson, Sheila (Rod) Gow, David (Lois) Hemmingson, Kimberly (Ernest) Phillipos; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends who will remember her with love. Helen is remembered by her family and friends as a kind, hardworking, selfless woman who was truly loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.  She and Axel loved to be surrounded by their family and friends - the door was always open and the welcome mat was always out.

A Prayer Service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Baker Funeral Chapel (5302 50 Avenue, Wetaskiwin) at 7:00PM.
