Welcome to the memorial page for

Eugene Barry Lobay

October 22, 1945 ~ February 8, 2017 (age 71) 71 Years Old

The Lobay Family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Eugene Barry Lobay, their much loved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. The second of Harry and Anne Lobay's five children, Eugene was born in Lac La Biche, Alberta on 22nd October 1945. A remarkable athlete, Eugene played in two Vanier Cups (1965 and 1967) for the University of Alberta Golden Bears Football Team, winning the latter. A knee injury kept him from pursuing football beyond university, but having been trained as an educator, he spent a lengthy career largely in Lac La Biche, both as a teacher and as a successful business person leading the family business. Following retirement, he moved to Ponoka, Alberta. A keen outdoorsman, Eugene's particular passion was fishing in Alberta, BC and Alaska.  Following a lengthy battle with cancer and other complicating factors he passed away on 8th February 2017 in Ponoka surrounded by family. Eugene is survived by his beloved partner Ada Moore, his adoring son Gordon Lobay, daughter-in-law Megan and his two dear grandchildren Harry (aged 9) and Grace (aged 2), as well as three siblings and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom he also loved very much. He will be sorely missed, but his good spirit, love of his family, integrity, and unique sense of humour will endure and continue to inspire us. A small memorial service is being planned.
